If you are considering a Siberian Husky and are looking for a breeder on the internet.....PLEASE READ!

WHAT IS A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER ?

When browsing through the MANY Siberian Husky sites on the internet, please be aware of the many, many so called "breeders" who are producing puppies with no concern for the health and well being of the dog.

I would like to point out a few of the responsibilities of a reputable RESPONSIBLE breeder.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder does not breed dogs under two years of age.   Dogs must be at least two years of age to be issued an OFA rating.  Also eye abnormalities often occur under 2 years of age.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder does the necessary health screenings such as OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) and ACVO (American College of Veterinary Opthamologists) or CERF (Canine Eye Research Foundation) eye exams to insure that the breeding stock is free from hip dysplasia and hereditary eye disorders such as Juvenile Cataracts, Corneal Dystrophy and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.  OFA has an open database and you may do a search based on either the AKC registration number or the name of the dog.  When in doubt as to the honesty of the information given to you, check with the OFA.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder  proudly lists this information on their website.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder follows the breed standard in regard to the proper coat type, overall structure, size, etc.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder does not breed for specific coat or eye color to satisfy the demands of a pet market.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder breeds to improve the breed and proves his breeding stock in performance events such as AKC conformation shows, AKC obedience trials and working degrees such as Sled Dog titles.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder has no need to advertise  "Champion Lines".  Those Champions are proudly displayed in the pedigrees that are provided on the website.  Champion lines that are 5 generations back are the hard work of RESPONSIBLE breeders!  Ask why the "Champion
lines" don't appear in the first generations, starting with the parents and grandparents.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder sells pet puppies with a spay/neuter contract and on an AKC limited registration.

A RESPONSIBLE breeder does not add to the ever growing numbers of abandoned Siberian Huskies and then hide behind the claim of being a rescue organization.

To find a RESPONSIBLE breeder check the Siberian Husky Club of America website

Don't pad the egos and pocketbooks of puppy mills and so called breeders.

Be an educated consumer and an informed puppy buyer. Help to PROTECT our breed, not DESTROY it.

A word about advertising ploys.  Many backyard breeders and unethical breeders will claim to have CHAMPION show lines.  More often than not there may be one or two champions in the pedigree but they are six generations back!  These breeders are trying to profit from the hard work of the reputable breeders who produced and finished those champions!  Another ploy is to advertise that their dogs are DNA certified or that they are an "AKC approved" kennel.  There is no such thing as an "AKC approved" kennel.  Once a "breeder" registers a certain amount of litters they are red flagged and the AKC will perform an inspection of their paperwork.  And dogs that are used over a certain number of times are required to be DNA profiled.  This is used for proof of parentage.  DNA profiling does NOT establish or guarantee any health issues.
