The Entry

So....You have received your premium list, now what?  Well, let's start at the beginning.  A typical Premium list will have on its cover the name of the show, the date of the show, an AKC event number and a brief description of where the show is being held.

The inside information will include a section on Entry Fees - the basic entry fee amount with exceptions in some cases for various classes.  It is up to each show-giving club to determine the entry fee for their show.  They are allowed to offer "special" entry fees for certain classes, example: Entry Fee is $20.00 for the first entry of each dog, except Puppy Classes, which are $15.00 each.  This section will also give specific information on how fees can be submitted and to whom to make out the check.

Also in this section is information regarding when the entries close.  All AKC show entries close prior to the event, in most cases at least three weeks prior to the show date.  There are NO entries accepted on the day of the show or after the closing date as stated on the premium list.

Also included in the premium list are any special instructions that pertain to the particular show, such as parking instructions, overnight parking reservations, and building rules, such as No Smoking regulations.  Usually there is a list of nearby motels and hotels, some that allow dogs and others that don't.  Accomodations that are willing to accept dogs are getting more difficult to find.  Please be sure to clean up after your dog!  Other basic information includes a description of the ribbons awarded for placement, any trophy items that are offered, and a listing of the current officers and show committees for the club.

One of the most important sections of the premium list is the judging panel.  There will be a list of the judges that will preside and their mailing addresses, followed by a breakdown of which judges will judge the individual breeds as well as who will judge each group and Best in Show competition.  The Siberian is listed in the Working Group, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog in the Herding Group.

ON TO THE ENTRY FORM!  Click here AKC Official Event Entry Form to view the entry form, you might want to print a copy and follow along with the description below. To print a copy of the entry form requires Adobe Acrobat.  If you don't have Adobe Acrobat, please follow the instructions on the AKC site, or click here.

As it states on the top of the entry form OFFICIAL AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB ENTRY FORM -  a very important fact!  Blank entry forms may be used, BUT they must contain the full information required on an Official AKC Entry Form.  Also, VERY IMPORTANT is that the back of the form, the Agreement, MUST be included.  The next thing on the entry form is the Name and Date of the Show.  This information is required so that the Superindtendent knows which show you are entering.  If you are using a blank form, this information must be included.  Also, in the top section of the entry form is a line indicated the $ amount enclosed.

At this point it is a good idea to read the back of the entry form, the Agreement.  In the section INSTRUCTIONS it gives some basic information regarding breeds that have varieties, like the Beagle (13 inch and 15 inch varieties) or the Poodle (Toy, Miniature, Standard)  This section also deal with entering a Champion in Best of Breed competition and how the dog must be listed as far as ownership.

Now, to the meat of the entry form!

  • BREED - simple, Siberian Husky or Polish Lowland Sheepdog (remember, this is the name as accepted by the AKC, not Husky or Sibe or PON)
  • VARIETY - Does not apply to our breed
  • SEX - Male or Female (Dog or Bitch)
  • DOG SHOW CLASS - Very important area.  A dog that is entered incorrectly in a class could face the possibility of losing any points that were won from that class. First of all, all classes are divided by sex, except Best of Breed competition.

Puppy Class - applies to either dog or bitch and can be divided 6-9 (6 months old and under 9 months)  and 9-12 (9 months old and under 12 months)

12-18 month Class - dog or bitch - (12 months old and under 18 months)

Novice Class - dog or bitch - This class is for any dog or bitch of any age over 6 months that as of the date of entries closing has not won more than three 1st place prizes in the Novice class OR a 1st place in Bred-By, American Bred or Open class, nor has any points towards it's championship.  This is a class that is not often used in shows with smaller entries, but is a class that is a good beginning point for dogs/bitches over 18 months of age that are inexperienced or are shown by an inexperienced owner.

Bred-By-Exhibitor Class - dog or bitch - This class is for any dog or bitch over the age of 6 months born in the USA that are owned or co-owned by the person or the spouse of the person who is one of the breeders or record on the dog.  Dogs/bitches in this class must be shown by one of the breeders or record or a member of their immediate family.  Immediate family includes husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister.

NOTE! - If the dog/bitch wins the Bred-By class, it can be taken back into the winners class by anyone, not just the breeder/owner.

Open Class - dog or bitch - This class is for any dog or bitch over the age of 6 months.  In most cases, the open class is where the mature animals are entered.  Puppies may be entered in this class, but again, the competition usually comes from more mature animals.

UNTIL YOUR DOG HAS COMPLETED IT'S AKC CHAMPIONSHIP IT CANNOT BE ENTERED IN BEST OF BREED COMPETITION

  • CLASS DIVISION - Does not apply to our breed
  • ADDITIONAL CLASSES - In the case of a show that offer a Sweepstake, this is where the entry would be indicated.  NOTE! - Dogs/bitches may be entered in multiple classes, however, it serves no purpose.  Entries are counted towards points by number of actual animals and not number of entries!
  • OBEDIENCE TRIAL CLASS - Self explanatory - subject for another website!
  • JR. SHOWMANSHIP CLASS - Self explanatory - subject for another website!
  • NAME OF JR. HANDLER - JR. HANDLER AKC NUMBER - See above
  • FULL NAME OF DOG - Registered name of dog or bitch.  Championship titles other than AKC are not accepted.
  • ENTER NUMBER HERE - Either the AKC Registration number that has been issued to the dog, its AKC Litter Number (can be shown on a litter number only for 30 days from the date of the first entry), ILP number - not eligible for conformation events - or its Foreign Registry number and country of origin.  NOTE! - Dogs/bitches can only be shown with a Foreign Registry number for a period of 30 days from the entry of the first show.  Dog/bitch must apply for AKC registration.
  • DATE OF BIRTH - Self explanatory
  • PLACE OF BIRTH - Mark the choice of USA - CANADA or FOREIGN, if foreign write in the country name
  • BREEDER - The name of the breeder/breeders of record
  • SIRE - The registered name of the sire of the dog/bitch, Championship titles other than AKC are not accepted.
  • DAM - The registered name of the dam of the dog/bitch, Championship titles other than AKC are not accepted.
  • ACTUAL OWNER(s) - Name of the owner and/or co-owner at the time the entries are made - ADDRESS - NOTE! - This is the address where the judging schedule will be sent
  • NAME OF OWNER'S AGENT (IF ANY) - Name of an authorized agent showing the dog other than the owner/co-owner
  • NOTE! - VERY IMPORTANT - Signature - the entry must be signed, not necessarily by the owner or co-owner, but someone authorized to make the entry

And there you have it!  You have filled out your entry form, now you just need to send it with a check or money order made payable to the Superintendent and have it arrive before the closing date of the show!

Of course, entries can now be made via the Internet.  INFO DOG site has an excellent internet entry service.
